In this section Vogler goes into more depth with the Approach to the Inmost Cave and the Ordeal stages of his hero’s journey. The approach the the inmost cave deals with learning more about yourself and the team if you are with one. This is where all of your preparation comes into affect. The ordeal is a battle for life and death. The hero enters the inmost cave and faces death or their greatest fear. It often takes place underground or in a place far from civilization. The hero must die or confront death.
The approach to the innermost cave reminds me of the bonding that you create with your "team". It reminds of my soccer teams that I was on and how we grew together as a team and how we all got along. This can be either comedic or romantic. The ordeal stage reminds me of the big battle or fight scene in a movie. It is very dramatic and intense.
It made me really think about the books and movie I have read. It always seems to be that a scene goes from very good and happy (the approach to the inmost cave) to very dramatic and horrible (the ordeal stage).I have thought abaout that before and Vogler's heroes journey reminded me of this theory of mine.
1. What is the best ordeal scene you have seen?
2. Which stage (approach or ordeal) do you think a story would be more flowing without?
3. Did you have an ordeal situation in your own story of your heroes journey?
